Job searching is not exactly something people look forward to. It's exhausting, unpredictable, and emotionally draining. Even Google agrees:

Google search autocomplete results showing job search-related phrases like “exhausting,” “demoralizing,” and “killing me,” reflecting common frustrations job seekers face.
The job search struggle is real… you're not alone.

But what if I told you that a Healthy Job Search —one that prioritizes balance, strategy, and mental well-being — could make all the difference?

🚫 Why Traditional Job Searching Isn’t Working

You've probably heard the common job search advice - "Treat your job search like a full-time job."  But if you think for a second - who would really like to have a job like that?

A job where you’re suddenly your own boss, working without a salary, facing constant rejection and tough competition - yet still expected to show up as your best self every day.

The closest comparison that comes to my mind is entrepreneurs.

They also deal with uncertainty, setbacks, and long hours of work before seeing a first paying customer. But...they choose that risky path. A job seeker on the other hand is often unprepared for the demanding and emotionally draining nature of the job search.

But What If Job Searching Could Be…Different?

Imagine a SMART, BALANCED, and HEALTHY job search.

If you're imagining a job seeker sitting on a yoga mat drinking a smoothie while sending out applications, that's not exactly what I have in my mind.

Not exactly what I mean by “healthy job search”

I’m talking about a job search that:

✔️supports your mental well-being

✔️keeps you motivated

✔️helps you land a job without burning out.

Let’s dive into what a Healthy Job Search actually looks like.

🧘 Mental Health & Job Searching: What You Need to Know

Studies have long shown that mental health shapes our thoughts, actions, and overall well-being, all of which are crucial for a healthy and balanced life free from stress and anxiety.

A 2024 study in Front Public Health found that extended unemployment negatively impacts mental health, leading to feelings of powerlessness that decrease motivation for job searching.

When you lack confidence, your job opportunities shrink. You never send that "perfect ATS-friendly CV" to a job you truly want or know what skills to sell to an employer.

When anxiety takes over, you can't focus. You can't even start applying.

When you don't know where to begin or what could be possible - you stay stuck, and settle for less than you deserve.

To feel in control of your job search, you need activities, tools and strategies that help you release frustration, manage emotions, and combat feelings of giving up. That’s where a Healthy Job Search approach comes in.

🔍 Tip #1: Don’t Start with Your CV — Start With You

I've struggled with anxiety and panic attacks for 5 years, and I've learned one thing: If I don't take care of my mental health, I can't do what I want. On my worst days I might be even afraid to leave my home.

If you're familiar with this feeling, you know that forcing yourself to create a perfect CV with an anxious mind won't bring you the results you want. You cannot focus or even dare to dream about better job opportunities when your brain is constantly in survival mode.

My psychologist once gave me advice that I would like to share with you:

🪴Your mind is like a garden that needs regular care to encourage healthy growth. If your garden has a strong base, only then you can start growing things.

Just like a garden, your mind needs consistent care to grow strong and thrive — especially during a job search.

Your mental health is the foundation for your job search success and it requires regular attention. Don’t hesitate to seek professional support if needed.

📅 Tip #2: Create a Balanced Job Search Schedule

It’s easy to believe that the amount of time you spend in front of a screen equals to productivity. But that's not the case. Being busy does not mean using time wisely.

I once ran a small experiment. I used a time tracking tool (Toggl) to record how much actual productive time I spent on job searching. It was around 3-4 hours per day.

💡 Research suggests that in an 8-hour workday, the average worker is productive for only 2 hours and 53 minutes.

If you’re unemployed, you technically have a lot of time to job searching. But searching for a job 8 hours a day is not effective. It adds little value and, sooner or later, you'll find yourself staring at the screen, unsure of what you’re doing wrong and feeling stuck.

2.1. Make Your Job Search Visual

Time management is a skill that takes practice. I've never been a good planner, I get easily distracted and I tend to postpone things.

The whole planning system have always seemed complicated until I tried this very simple time-blocking technique. It helped me improve not only my job search but also daily life and well-being.

Here's how to get started:

✅ Step 1: Open Your Calendar

Take a pen and paper or use an online (Google) Calendar. Stay with me - don’t let your mind argue, “But I don’t use a calendar,” etc.

✅ Step 2: Block Out Fixed Activities

Open your calendar so you can see the entire week. Block the hours for essential activities like eating and sleeping. I created an example from Mon-Fri, and used two different colours:

Basic calendar template showing core routines like meals and sleep, leaving open space for flexibility and personalization.
Start simple. You don’t need to plan every second.

✅ Step 3: Identify Your Prime Productivity Hours

It is very important to understand when is the best time for you to do the job searching. It is completely pointless to force yourself to be happy and motivated at 9am if you just woke up at 8:30.

Therefore, ask yourself – what are my prime (creative) hours for an activity that requires focus, concentration, writing and searching. It has a very easy answer – morning, afternoon, evening or late at night. Choose one slot.

If we rely on the science, it suggests that we are truly productive for about 3 hours per day. I know I'm a morning person, so I blocked 9:00-12:00 with a green colour.

Not every hour needs to be filled. A structured but realistic plan helps you stay focused.

✅ Step 4: Schedule Time for Your Well-Being

This is where most people go wrong. They feel guilty taking breaks as they "should" be job searching. Here’s the truth: Your brain needs breaks to function at its best.  If you wear yourself down you don’t get the results you want.

Scheduling time to care for your mind isn’t a luxury — it’s part of a smart job search strategy.

For example, running is widely recommended because it helps reduce cortisol levels. But you need to find an activity you actually enjoy—forcing yourself to run or go to the gym if you hate it is pointless.

💡 Example activities to add:

Yoga

Running, dancing, or walking (30 mins/day is ideal)

Listening to music or meditating

A healthy job search isn’t 8 hours in front of a screen. Here's a real-life calendar example that blends job searching with rest, movement, and mental clarity.

Now when you know when you eat, sleep, search for a job and engage yourself in activities that support your mental wellbeing I teach you the last trick.

⏳ Tip #3: Manage your Job Search time wisely

As I mentioned before, I get easily distracted. Even if I get this block out 3 hours, I need structure and discipline to stay focused. These two time management techniques have made a big difference:

  • The Pomodoro Technique

Set a timer for 25 minutes and focus exclusively on the task you need to get done. You will not get up in between to check the laundry, watch Instagram reels or listen to Whatsapp audios.

After 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break, then repeat the cycle.

  • The 52/17 Rule

Work for 52 minutes - focus on your task and eliminate distractions.

After 52 minutes, take a 17-minute break, then repeat the cycle

By now you should know your prime time for job searching and how to manage the time inside this time. Sounds like an Inception Movie..(a dream inside the dream).
